About the YEC

Registration for the 2012 YUEA Economics Competition is now closed.  Details of the 2013 competition will be released next fall.  Thank you!

The YUEA Economics Challenge will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2012.  The YUEA Economics Competition  broadens students’ understanding of macroeconomics and the global economy through competition.  The Economics Challenge is a phenomenal learning experience in economic analysis, monetary policy decision-making, public speaking, and teamwork.  Team members will gain experience:

  • Analyzing the current state of the economy
  • Explaining timely issues and risks that confront the economy and policymakers
  • Recommending monetary policy that will keep the economy on an even keel

Competition Format
Teams consist of:

  • Five students
  • Up to two alternates
  • One advisor

The competition has two components:

  • A 20-minute presentation on the economy
  • A 10-minute Q&A session

Teams are encouraged to format their presentation as though they were monetary policymakers–the presentation should make concrete recommendations for how to keep the economy on course using monetary policy.

The competition will consist of two rounds; in the morning round, teams will compete in brackets consisting of 4 teams.  The top  team from each bracket will move on to the final round, which will take place after lunch.  Each team will receive feedback on their performance from Yale professors and economics graduate students, who will serve as judges.  At lunch, students will hear from a keynote speaker.

A PC will be available for teams to use to display their presentation.  Teams should make sure that their presentation is PC compatible and should bring a flash drive with the presentation to the competition.
